Unknown Smith (Koto, 1400-1600) Japanese Bizen Wakizashi Sword

Shinogi zukuri blade having 19.75-inch cutting edge from slightly elongated kissaki to (2)-piece copper cat’s scratch motif habaki and 25.5-inches from kissaki to o-suriage nakagojiri; nakago having (2) mekugi ana with mei reading ‘Bi Shu (Bizen) Osafune’; having buke zukuri koshirae with tsuka having cream ito with remnants of gold tone pigment on same beneath, fuchi and kashira are plain darkened iron including beveled edges on kashira; tsuba having landscape motif on each side with top side having figure and remnants of inlaid shakudo, including (2) metal seppa and (2) leather seppa

Length: 28 inches (overall, in saya)

Condition: Fair, overall moderate to heavy wear consistent with age, material and normal use; blade in poor polish with areas of discoloration, scuffs, scratches; edge having (3) pen-tip or smaller sized chips to edge that do not extend beyond heavily obscured hamon and would easily polish out; no deep pitting noted; blade having enough thickness to safely allow for a polish that would not risk exposing any core steel; heavy wear to koshirae throughout including splitting saya having tape and missing decorative end of saya; tsuka having unraveling and discolored ito and losses to same; metal fittings having areas of surface rust / discoloration throughout; tsuba having lost majority of its shakudo inlay on both sides
