Gustave Dore Illustrated Dante and La Fontaine Leather Bound Books
(7) volumes including ‘The Dore Dante: Vision of Hell, Vision of Purgatory, Vision of Paradise’, London, Cassell and Co., 1904, six volumes, folio, #4/1000 copies, having gilt stamped full red morocco bindings, leather inner covers, moire silk end papers, top edges gilt, frontispiece portraits of the poet and the illustrator and over one-hundred full-page wood-engravings and hand illuminated initial letters of alternating Cantos and a ‘The Fables of La Fontaine, Translated into English Verse by Walter Thornbury’, Cassell, Petter and Galpin, London, c.1870, having a half morocco over cloth binding, marbled end papers, all edges gilt, a portrait frontispiece of the author, over eighty full page wood engravings and smaller text cuts by Dore

Condition: overall light wear consistent with normal use, ‘The Fables of La Fontaine’ having edge wear to leather, spine having minuscule chips to top, front end paper having ink gift inscription, ‘Vision of Hell’ volumes 1 and 2 having water damage along lower edge
