John Alexander Ford (Scottish, 1864-1925) ‘Lady in Black’ Oil on Canvas
Undated, signed ‘A. Ford’ lower right, possible ink signature ‘J. A. Ford’ and title on a partial label verso from the Scottish National Exhibition, Edinburgh, 1908, full-length portrait of a woman, having a bronze- and gold-tone accented gesso on carved wood frame having a March 2004 label of the Chicago Conservation Center, Chicago IL verso

Condition: 2004 conservation included cleaning, lining, restretching, Maimeri retouch and Winston varnish, also having a repaired 10.5′ vertical tear at the upper left quadrant with inpainting, a 7′ x 5′ repaired possible puncture at and behind her back having inpainting and (2) horizontal hairline cracks to the paint running the width of the canvas (one below her pinky finger and the other roughly 3′ below that) also with inpainting, some alligatoring to surface mostly concentrated to the flesh tones and bodice of the dress, with some retouching to the face and various other small areas throughout, frame having light chipping, cracking and missing gesso
