African Weapon and Fly Whisk Assortment

(11) items including (2) swords / daggers having wide symmetrical blades each having decorative wood scabbard with a sword and scabbard having studded metal motif throughout; (2) axes including ceremonial axe with metal wrapped and embossed handle; (3) war clubs all having rounded heads; a curved axe / dagger head having conical base; as well as fly whisks including a silver metal and yak hair ‘chauri’ from India; a wire-wrapped bone-handled Luba; and a wood Dogon from Africa; together with a Chinese carved bone-handled brush

Provenance: The Estate of George ‘Yorgo’ Demetrakopoulos; professor, assistant director of the Medieval Institute and assistant to the dean at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan from 1965-2000

Condition: Very Good to Fair, overall light to moderate wear consistent with age, materials and normal use; wear to wood on handles and scabbards including chips, cracks and missing adornments; (2) maces having stress cracks following wood grain that do not compromise the integrity; an axe blade loose in handle and stress cracks in handle following wood grain that do not compromise the integrity; wear to blades including chips, rolls, and pitting; oxidation on wire wrap of Luba whisk
