First Edition Vols. I and II, Isaac Newton ‘The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy’
1729, commonly known as ‘The Principia’ published by Benjamin Motte in two volumes, translated by Andrew Motte, remaining the first and only translation of Newton’s ‘Philosophia Naturalis Principia Mathematica’, first published in London in 1687, inscription on front page of ‘J. Pollard, 1855’, both volumes complete, having engraved frontispieces, multiple folding engraved plates, Volume I having (25) numbered foldout plates, Volume II having (19) numbered foldout plates, (3) unnumbered foldout plates, (2) letter press table foldouts, both having mottled calfboards, professionally re-backed, gilt spine titles and a signature; together with a modern paperback copy

Condition: interiors having some repairs, moderate foxing, some staining, bindings restored but some areas of wear on upper and lower edges, bumped corners, areas of chipped leather on edges, Volume I having Plate XVIII torn at fold, Plate XX 0.25-inch chip lower right edge, Page 175 hole in mid-right margin, Volume II having Page 9/10 uncut from 11/12, Page 13/14 uncut from 15/16, staining on 40 and 41, holes on bottom of 27/28
