19th century, unsigned, romantic narrative depicting an interior scene of young woman sleeping, being discovered by a standing woman, while a young man with tricolor hat and sash stands by, a weeping man in the background, along with symbolic elements of a cowering dog, caged bird and discarded toys in the background, housed in an elaborate gold-tone frame; property from a Chicago, Illinois collector
Condition: Good, painting having received restoration, including relining and inpainting throughout background area, especially at upper corners; patch to upper center visible en verso; debris in later varnish application; lifting paint below doorknob area; scratch to lower left quadrant; craquelure overall; buckling along lower quadrant; rubbing from frame at edges; chips and paint losses at edges; frame broken and repaired at lower center and left center; not examined out of the frame
